This project was a learning experience, it was done for a customer when we went off on a fantasy of making a bejeweled TV antenna.

No, Mara is not the dog, ok? This bed was built for a customer who wanted a bed for her dog that matched her bed.

Careful observers will see the terrier in the headboard grain. Mahogany.

Walnut. This was made from chair parts hanging around the shop, steam bent extras for the stretcher, and cutoffs from a chair crest glued together and lathed.

This was my first attempt at lathe work and Mara's early work with chemical stains.

My artist friend Rick Turner needed a multi-purpose frame for his artwork and I needed to play with Euro-style knock down hardware. Figured Gum, Bloodwood and Wenge.

There was so much wrong on this early job that I hesitate to post it and can't remember why I quit. Structurally it was fine, and it makes a pretty nice photo. I worked on this in the early 80's as part of a trim crew.

Yet another piece made form the evil Cedar Elm that crushed the Navarro's home.

This was made as a gift to my parents on their anniversary using a Sears Router Lathe.

Testing the vaunted free enterprise system I made a batch of easels and sold them to my fellow art students for $35. each. Staining the lumber store pine first, and then routing away the color at the edges makes them look pretty good.

Salvaged from the old Austin Airport these runway lights are being made into desk lamps, but they are better suited for sconces or ceiling lights.

Storage boxes in progress. These will be wall hanging storage for a herb growing business in the Texas Hill Country.

A miter fold is basically taping the ends of a box on the outside edge and then folding the panels to form a box, it acts like a hinge and provide reasonable and even pressure at the joint.

On Tara's boxes I don't want to rely on glue alone to hold the joint. This jig along with a dado blade cuts slots at the corner joint into which I can glue splines, in effect, offering a bit of the mechanical advantage of a finger joint.

Reproduced from photographs and made for the restoration of the Texas Capitol, walnut. The chair's crest is embossed, not carved. A mold was taken and a bronze platen made, irons, like what you used to use to iron clothes, were riveted on to the platen, a 6 ton press was borrowed and the pattern was embossed into the crest. Michael Hall of Driftwood, Texas, artist and pyrotechnician, was the genius behind the platen, and Cliff Scott is the guy who knew it would work. So, in the end we ended up with a reproduction that was absolute.

We made a number of these for Gardens in Austin.

When a number of trees were cut down on the Texas Capitol grounds we were given a contract to make benches out of them. These trees had names, and were some of the toughest and gnarliest lumber we've ever encountered. Pecan.

A neighbor came by and needed a small bench for her sweet old dog, this is made of salvaged long leaf pine.

Mara convinced me to not flush the dowels. Amazingly, I listened.

These were to be pulls, but instead we made large corbels for Esther's Follies' building.

Your girlfriend won't mind if you use her hair on your furniture.

Dr Wilder is a hand surgeon, someone I want to keep close at hand. Carpathian Elm. Veneer, Ribbon Mahogany and yes, Brass balls.

Oak and Purpleheart, the top is raised on a steel bracket. This is an early piece, and still a favorite though I would switch out the oak with something else. I came close to visiting the hand surgeon trying to mill the handles. Over time one learns to hear when the wood is just about to come undone and shatter. Oh yeah, it had a hidden compartment.

Attention Husbands: This was made as a anniversary gift, Mesquite, Osage Orange, India Ink dyed Walnut and Pewter.

Years later I was asked to make another one, I still had the drawings and templates.

Made from scraps, no fasteners, nothing over 1/2" thick, and if it's not long enough it's glued up.

Made for an astronomer, both are oak, one is mineral stained oak.

Z stands for Zinc, which is what the top is made of. The base is mahogany with a galvanized steel stretcher, this was made for Gardens of Austin.

The Attila Tables were named after the Attila the Hun.

Salvaged marble, purpleheart with beech and ebony accents. The columns are styled after Minoan columns. After living with it for a while I shortened the legs by about 6" eliminating the pads at the base.

The customer supplied the top. It's way, way too small! Purpleheart, Walnut, Marble.

The brass legs came from a damaged table. Curly Maple.

A customer came and told us she wanted something "fun". What's more fun than Tinker Toys? Cliff Scott came up with this design which collapses flat and stores away. The Tinker parts are turned and indexed on the lathe, the color is aniline dye. I've got a batch of sketches for a lot of other giant Tinker Toy pieces, from torchieres to tables.
